An Inaugural Ceremony of Pakistan Navy’s Mangroves Plantation Campaign 2021 was held at Bhambore Creek, along the coast of Sind province. Vice Admiral Zahid Ilyas (HI(M) S Bt, Commander Coast was chief guest of the event. This was Pakistan Navy’s sixth mangroves plantation campaign since 2016. Since 2016 Pakistan Navy has planted around 7.00 million mangrove saplings. Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative, IUCN Pakistan was the keynote speaker at the event.

Introduction and Context

The current Government of Pakistan, under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, has addressed on both the national and global stage, the two challenges of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss through the Green Stimulus programme, the Restoration Fund, the Billion Tree Tsunami programme and the Recharge Pakistan programme. They have initiated the notification of National Parks and Protected Areas and wildlife conservation. All these varied initiatives have been done within a human development and livelihoods context. Tribute to Sardar Naseer Tareen

It was saddening to learn of the sad demise of Sardar Naseer Tareen, an ardent conservationist. He started his career as a wildlife filmmaker after his training in the United States. During a series of films on the biodiversity of Balochistan he discovered a rapid disappearance of several species. In the year 1984 with the support of US Fish and Wildlife Department, he set up the first community-run Sustainable Use Conservation Project in Pakistan called the Torghar Conservation Programme (TCP).
