Women Climbing for Climate Change

IUCN’s partner ICIMOD supports K2 ExpeditionThe ‘First Nepali Women Expedition to K2 2014’ comprising three young women climbers from Nepal has set out to climb Mt K2  in Pakistan. At 8611m, K2 is the second highest mountain on earth.IUCN’s member and partner ICIMOD (International Center for Integrated Mountain Development) is collaborating with the Himalayan Women Welfare Society to support the K2 expedition: ‘Women Climbing for Climate Change’.

The expedition is being undertaken by a team of three young women climbers from Nepal – Maya Sherpa, Dawa Sherpa and Pasang Sherpa – to demonstrate the strength of women and the potential for positive change. By becoming the first Nepali women to summit K2, the team hopes to raise awareness of climate change and funds for the protection of the mountain environment.

ICIMOD has pledged its support to the expedition as a manifestation of its commitment to integrate women into climate change research and adaptation, and sustainable development in the Himalayas, as well as to further gender equity and gender transformative change.

It is estimated that the expedition will take about 65 days from mid-June to the end of August 2014, starting from Kathmandu. During the expedition, the team will document and record material on mountain women and climate change. Upon their return, the team will deliver a seminar to share their findings and experiences.
