Resolution No. 01/2012 Adopted by the IUCN Pakistan National Committee in the IUCN Pakistan National Committee meeting held on December 20, 2012 at Karachi

Members of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee took a serious note of the alarming and deteriorating situation of the law and order situation in Pakistan and especially in Karachi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan during its meeting held on December 20, 2012 at Karachi.

THE PAKISTAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
Expressed their concern that the life of ordinary people has been affected, and they live in constant fear. The wave of indiscriminate killing of women and girls working for the well-being of children has further increased the vulnerability of health workers in remote areas.

Were shocked at the incident which occurred on 18th December 2012 when a gunman shot four volunteer health workers during an anti polio health campaign in Karachi, Gadap Town, and in another incident where a worker was killed in the northwest city of Peshawar, reflects the growing insecurity of these development workers. All of the victims were Pakistani nationals working with the United Nations Programme to eradicate polio.

Took serious note of the incident took place in July 2012, where a local paramedic associated with the polio vaccination programme was also shot dead, and a doctor of the World Health Organization along with his driver were wounded in two separate attacks in Sohrab Goth, in Karachi.

The IUCN Pakistan National Committee strongly condemns all such attacks on the innocent workers especially women and girls and urges the Government to bring the criminals to justice and provide security to all those working for social health. The PNC further demands that action must be taken to establish the rule of law, and create a conducive and secure environment for women health workers.
