member organizations in its well-attended meeting held on May 10, 2011 in Karachi adopted a resolution to record its deep respects and regards for the dedicated and selfless services of the environmental activists Abdul Ghani, General Secretary, Pakistan Fisher Folks and Haji Abu Bakar of Kaka Pir village who were brutally murdered on 4th/5th May 2011.  The Committee expressed its sincere condolences to the bereaved families.

The Committee unanimously agreed that members of the Committee will immediately visit the grieving families to express solidarity with them.

Next day, on 11th May 2011, Mr. Javed Jabbar, IUCN Vice President and Regional Councilor alongwith Ms. Afia Salaam, IUCN Commission member, Mr. Ghous Bux, Programme Officer, Shirkat Gah,  Mr. Subhash Kumar Dawani, Manager Conservation, WWF, Pakistan and Mr. George Sadiq, Programme Officer, IUCN Pakistan visited the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls. Mr. Jabbar conveyed the message of condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of Mr. Mohammad Tahseen, Chairperson, IUCN Pakistan National Committee and all PNC members. He also assured them the full support of the Committee members in the struggle to secure justice and ensure the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the persons responsible for this atrocity.

Mr. Abdul Ghani, General Secretary of Pakistan Fisher Folks Forum along with an associate Haji Abu Bakar of Kaka Pir village were kidnapped by the members of a land mafia on May 05, 2011 and taken to an island where they were brutally murdered after severe torture. Their bodies were found on May 06, 2011 from the island with marks of torture. Abdul Ghani’s dead body was found with broken neck and wrists.

Mr. Abdul Ghani and other members had been continuously receiving threats by the land mafia before this incident. The area office of the Pakistan Fisher Folks was destroyed with an explosive device on January 16, 2011. The land mafia of the area was cutting mangroves and converting them into residential plots, which is a lucrative business. Mr. Abdul Ghani and Haji Abu Bakar were environment activists who opposed the cutting of mangroves from the vicinity of their village. They worked in association with WWF, Pakistan to conduct eco-tourism and promote the protection of mangroves and the environment. The killing of Mr. Abdul Ghani and Haji Abu Bakar has shocked the environmental community and deprived the whole country of two courageous human beings.
