Joint Efforts to make FATA Environment Cell Project a Success

The FATA region, crippled by instability and environmental degradation over the years, is facing numerous challenges. There was an urgent need for the establishment of an Environment Cell within the FATA Secretariat, in order to include environmental concerns into development planning. The life-saving humanitarian, recovery and development efforts of the federal and provincial governments, the military, humanitarian agencies, donors and international financial institutions were successfully launched; however, the essential ecological focus was missing. The environmental impact assessments are now being built into their planning, which is required to preclude any development that degrades the environment. Declining fresh water flow poses a grave threat to Indus delta and coastal communities

A dying delta
A subcommittee of the Senate has recently raised serious concerns on the ecological disaster that has gripped the Indus delta. This is not the first time that the issue has resonated among the highest legislative forum of the country. In February 2015, experts shared an ominous report before the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology: if urgent remedies are not employed, Thatta and Badin will submerge by 2050 and Karachi by 2060.
