The 75th anniversary of IUCN was commemorated which was chaired by Dr. Kauser Abdullah Malik, Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research. The event was further adorned by the presence of esteemed guests, including Mr. Javed Jabbar, former Global Vice President of IUCN, Mr. Malik Amin Aslam, the former Global Vice President of IUCN and former Minister of Environment, Government of Pakistan, Dr. Roomi Saeed Hayat, Chairperson of the National Committee of IUCN Members, Mr. Amir Iqbal, Chief Executive of SECMC and Thar Foundation and representatives from various IUCN Member organizations. Noteworthy is the presence of a representative from the Embassy of France, further enhancing the significance of the event.
IUCN 75-year anniversary celebrations in Pakistan
During the commemorative ceremony, Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative IUCN Pakistan, presented a compelling narrative of IUCN’s historical journey, originating in Fontainebleau, France, in 1948. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of IUCN Pakistan was shared, accompanied by a presentation on the organization’s accomplishments and its ongoing initiatives, providing the audience with a deeper understanding of IUCN’s impactful work.
Mr. Malik Amin Aslam former Global Vice President of IUCN while delivering his remarks said “IUCN is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, with the expertise and reach of more than 1,400 Member organisations and over 18,000 international experts. The Union has assisted the Government of Pakistan in developing policies at both the national and provincial levels, laying the foundation for the country’s journey in conservation.”

Dr. Roomi Saeed Hayat, Chairperson National Committee of IUCN Members, reflected upon IUCN’s global, regional and national role for the conservation of environment. He further noted that “The 75th anniversary celebrations of IUCN is not just a reflection on past achievements but a call to action for a sustainable and resilient future. As we look forward, let us continue to collaborate and work hand in hand towards preserving the biodiversity that sustains life on our planet.”
Ms. Sabine Vermillard, Scientific and Academic Attaché, Embassy of France delivered her remarks on this occasion and appreciated the role of IUCN for making the impact on global environmental agreements and their implementation through its partner organizations.
