IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization. Today IUCN is the largest professional global conservation network and a leading authority on the environment and sustainable development. More than 1,200 member organizations, including 200+ government and 900+ non-government organizations are working with IUCN. Almost 11,000+ voluntary scientists and experts are grouped in the Six Scientific Commissions. The Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) is one of IUCN’s six scientific Commissions. CEM is a network of volunteer experts, numbering approximately1000, from around the world working on ecosystem management related issues, for example, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, Red List of Ecosystems, fisheries and ecosystem restoration and services. The Commission works closely with the other IUCN Commissions, regional offices and global thematic programs. To achieve the objectives of CEM – West Asian region in order to enhance and promote education, training and research for the conservation and management of ecosystems, various activities related to the Specific Ecosystems and Biomes are being organized by CEM-West Asia Region. In this regard, CEM-West Asia Region and SCSP have jointly organized three Training Workshops on Wetland Management (held in March 2013), a Workshop on Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem of Pakistan (held in Sept 2013) and a Regional Training Program on Environmental Assessment and Ecosystem Management (held in Dec 2013) at the Department of Zoology, University of Karachi. More than 180 postgraduate students of Zoology, Botany, Geography, Environmental Studies and Biochemistry participated and benefitted from these workshops.
Recently, a four-day International Training Workshop on Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem was jointly organized from March 24-27, 2014 by the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), West Asia and College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University. The workshop was inaugurated by Dean of College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University. The participants of the workshop included: students of College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University experts and researchers from Qatar Foundation, Al-Wabra Wildlife Preservation, Qatar Museums Authority, and various other institution from Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Pakistan, Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait.
CEM-West Asian region is planning to undertake five international training and capacity building workshops for the West Asia Regional countries during 2014-16.

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
International Training Workshop on Conservation and Management of Protected Areas

Goal
The goal of the training workshop is to enhance awareness and understanding of issues related to conservation and management of ecosystem and protected areas and to build the capacity within the regional countries to address these issues.
Objectives
- To impart latest knowledge and research techniques and skills for the effects of pollutants on marine ecosystem, conservation and management of ecosystem and protected areas.
- To increase individual and institutional capacity to address the conservation and management of ecosystem protected areas.
- Sharing knowledge and experiences in field data collection, data handling, data analysis and interpretation, species composition, range of key species etc.
- To familiarize with international policies and targets for conservation and management of protected areas.
- By the end of the training, the participants will be aware of:
- The data-collection techniques and needs for different management measures; be familiar with the factors that affect the ability of various management measures
- International ecosystem, biodiversity and protected areas policy targets and relevant to conservation and management measures
- Understand with indicators and reference points, both biological and economic, as tools in conservation of ecosystem biodiversity and protected areas to meet policy targets.
THROUGH INTERNATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS, A NEW NETWORK OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WILL BE ESTABLISHED IN OUR REGION.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND/ TARGETED PARTICIPANTS
These Training Workshops are intended for those individuals who are involved/ interested to start careers in the field of wetland conservation, management, conservation and management of biodiversity, management of protected areas/ mangrove areas etc. or are involved research activities on these topics. They may be government officials concerned with wetland management planning, policies and development, protected areas officers, water resource managers, employees of local authorities, university research and teaching staff, NGO representatives involved in the wetlands management/research and graduate students with special subject of Environmental studies, biodiversity, wetland etc.
ELIGIBILITY
B.Sc or equivalent qualification OR Field experience equal to such level / nominated by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Sultanate of Oman.
WORKSHOP FEE
The registration fee for one workshop is US $ 400/- for international participants which includes administrative fees, workshop materials, and certificate awarding ceremony. The workshop registration Fee does not include international travel and other personal expenses.
ACCOMMODATION & TRAVEL INFORMATION Accommodation The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Sultanate of Oman will provide local hospitality (accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner) during the workshop for selected international participants. Local transportation will be provided by the Ministry from/to Muscat airport. Visa requirements It is the responsibility of participants to ensure they secure the appropriate visa. After receiving registration fee, all the passport details will be forwarded to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Sultanate of Oman for visa process. Travel Insurance It is the responsibility of workshop participants to ensure that they have appropriate travel insurance. Cancellation Policy The workshop organizers regret that the registration fee will not be refunded for the registrations cancelled after December 5, 2014 or for no-shows at the workshop.
