IUCN Members in top global rankings for environmental think tanks

07 February 2011 | News story

IUCN congratulates three of its Member organizations that have been ranked in the world’s top 10 environmental think tanks in the 2010 Global “Go-To Think Tank Index” of the University of Pennsylvania.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) topped the rankings with the Worldwatch Institute (WWI) listed third and the Ecologic Institute ranking in sixth place.

Since its launch in 2006, the annual “Global Go-To Think Tank Rankings” report has become an authoritative source of the top public policy research institutes in the world. The 2010 rankings were based on a worldwide survey of 1,500 scholars, journalists, policy makers and peers from approximately 120 countries. Close to 7,000 think tanks were nominated and ranked.

“The purpose of the rankings is to highlight the important work that think tanks perform for governments and civil societies around the world, often in dangerous and difficult conditions”, said Professor James McGann of the University’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Programme, who tabulated the global ranking.
